There is a very pretty pond halfway up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Maine. And there is a gift shop with hot coffee at the top.

Walking in the rain,
questioning the wisdom
of the brain
that made this decision.

Who wants to sweat hiking in the rain?
The breath of the mountain
blowing cold through the pines, and firs
and maples and birch,
across the open face of Cadillac Mountain.

Temperature dropping
nose running
breath visible – body fog
essence of inner heat,
personal warmth
– self.

Boot bottoms gripping
wet granite.
Rain dripping from rim of the hat,
from the leaves and the needles –
Tree sweat
sweet rain.
